Merry Christmas friends!

I want to apologize for failing to update my Beach Boys blog adequately these past few months. I've been very busy. When I started this blog I was a 19 year old Freshman in college and now, 5 years later I have 2 full time jobs, a fiancee, bills and lots of other things that are getting in the way. Fortunately, technology is making it easier for me to update this blog. (Right now I am typing this on my phone)

I promise to upload dozens of new things next year and to finally review the SMiLE sessions box set and talk about the new Beach Boys album coming out.

It's amazing that after 5 years I still have SO much I have to say about the Beach Boys. I love the Beach Boys more now than I ever did and I can't wait to continue being a fan of the greatest pop band of all time.

Thank you all for reading and I hope you all got exactly what you wanted! I know I did. I got an original vinyl version of Smiley Smile in PERFECT condition <3.

New Explorers Club Music

Let's face it folks, the Beach Boys are never coming back, but at least we have the Explorers Club!

Last week I interviewed one of my musical heroes, Jason Brewer, from the band The Explorers Club. If you like The Beach Boys, The Beatles or America you need to go to amazon.com right now and download three brand new songs by The Explorers Club! The best part? They're all free.

These three songs are being presented as a suite of music called "The Californian Suite". The three songs on the disc are "Walk On By" (a Burt Bacharach and Hal David standard covered by Dionne Warwick, Isaac Hayes, The Beach Boys and many other greats), Weight Of The World (a brand new original song) and Summer Days and Summer Nights (an original song that references the Beach Boys album of the same name).

This suite of music is fantastic, both as a marketing tool and as a release. All 3 songs are better than anything The Explorers Club have done before. These 3 songs represent a band more unified, educated, confident and artistic than ever before. Their version of Walk On By is different than any you may have ever heard before. The vocals are sung in a powerful and agonizing way that stands out in my mind much more than Dionne Warwick's version and their version also doesn't have the same backing vocals that the Beach Boys version had, so it is impossible to declare them "copycats", considering this version is completely unique. It even has a nasty organ solo at the end!

When I first heard the Beach Boys cover of Walk On By, I ADORED it. I must have listened to their version 20,000 times. I've learned the song and even thought about recording a cover myself. I am kind of glad I didn't get around to recording my version, because it would never have been as good as the Explorers Club version.

The 2 original songs on the suite, Weight of the World and Summer Days and Summer Nights are sort of spiritual sisters. They belong together. Weight of the World has this great flamenco guitar riff in it and amazing Spanish castanets acting as the rhythm. The song also has a great horn riff in the middle of it that makes the song sound like a Bacharach standard (Raindrops anyone?). This song is beautifully crafted and is so gorgeous that I'm afraid some people won't give it a chance, just for being so gorgeous.

Summer Days and Summer Nights is slightly slower than Weight of the World, but probably will have a greater appeal to the general public because it doesn't feature any castanets or flamenco guitar playing, but instead focuses on singing and vocal harmonies. The vocal track on this song is really gorgeous and so are the vocal harmonies dispersed throughout the entire song. Another awesome thing about this song is the ending, which picks up in speed and has a nice keyboard solo with some excellent acoustic guitar riffs and flute lines as well. It's really groovy and reminds me of The Free Design and Harpers Bizarre.

Interview: Jason Brewer of the Explorers Club

The Explorers Club is one of my favorite bands. I have wanted to interview them for years and I finally had the chance!

The Explorers Club are a pop band that sound a lot like the Beach Boys with perfectly in pitch vocal harmonies and unbelievably catchy hooks in all of their songs. They released their debut album "Freedom Wind" on the Dead Oceans label in 2008 and since then I have been so incredibly anxious for new music from the guys. Thankfully NEXT WEEK the Explorers Club will be returning with new music in the form of three exclusive "suites" of music that will be available through Amazon.com beginning next TUESDAY, October 25th when the "California Suite" will become available. I am so excited for these suites! I watched the promotional video below and it will feature a cover of the Burt Bacharach song "Walk On By" (also covered by the Beach Boys in 1968), the song Hitchin' A Ride as well as two "under construction" mixes of songs from their soon to-be-released new album "Grand Hotel" that will be available on Rock Ridge Music.

Jason Brewer is the principle song writer for the Explorers Club. He is the Brian Wilson of the band. I admire him a heck of a lot. He reminds me of Brian Wilson in a lot of ways; teaching his band members the vocal harmonies and meticulously rehearsing each part over and over again, giving suggestions to make the sound just the way he hears it in his head. I imagine him coming into band rehearsals and recording sessions with brand new songs in his hands anxious to show them off to the guys.

I have probably listened to the Explorers Club's 6 song EP and their debut full-length "Freedom Wind" a million times. I seriously spin the Explorers Club as often as the Beach Boys (and that is saying a lot). I don't think the Explorers Club are copy cats, I think they are pop fanatics, just like me and I think to label them as anything but fantastic is a poor judgment call.

I love the Explorers Club and I am absolutely giddy to share this interview with Jason Brewer!

1. When and where did the Explorers Club form?

Jason: We formed in 2005 in Charleston, SC in Dave Ellis' (one of the band's singers and multi-instrumentalists) backyard.

2. Are you [Jason] the only song writer in the band?

Jason: I am the only songwriter in the band, but I collaborate with Troy Stains and Mike Williamson - two songwriter friends of mine.

3. Besides the Beach Boys and the Beatles, who are some other big influences for the Explorers Club?

Jason: Herb Alpert, Neil Diamond, The Bee Gees, Burt Bacharach, CSNY, Andy Williams, The Grass Roots, The Turtles, The Zombies, Dan Penn, Joe South, ABBA, Frankie Valli, Bob Crewe, Roger Nichols, Paul Williams, Jimmy Webb, Glen Campbell, Booker T and the MGs... too many to name!

4. Your self titled, 6 song demo cd, where was it recorded and who mixed and mastered it?

Jason: It was recorded in too many places to name - a lot of it was done with my friend Troy Stains in Atlanta, GA. We mixed it ourselves. It was most likely mastered by Kevin Crothers in Charleston. That was WAY TOO LONG AGO.

5. What was the process like of getting signed to Dead Oceans and recording Freedom Wind?

Jason: They saw us play at SXSW in 2007 and signed us on the spot. We spent that summer making our record with Matt Goldman in Atlanta, GA. We really explored vocal harmonies and sound combinations to get that classic sound down just right.

6. What praise have you received that meant the very most to you so far (for example, if Brian Wilson told me he liked my music, I would cry)?

Jason: I think Brian [Wilson] calling me was real special. I also felt like our review in UNCUT magazine by Bud Scoppa was a career highlight so far. Singing with Darian and Nelson from Brian's band at the Troubadour in LA was very special.

7. What makes your new CD "Grand Hotel" that is about to be released different from "Freedom Wind"?

Jason: It is the REAL Explorers Club. It is our own sound. It is harmonies, classic pop sounds, lighthearted spirit and most remarkably - it's own VERY unique sound that is new and classic all at once. It is a musical vacation.

8. Are you going to buy the Smile Sessions by the Beach Boys when it released in November?

Jason: I plan to camp by my mailbox from now until it is delivered.

9. What are you planning to do after your next album is out? Tour? Record more? Take a break?

Jason: We will play shows and hopefully make a new record REALLY fast to follow it up. I already have two concepts half written for two more albums... get ready!

Smile - Millennium Edition

This version of smile was made in 2000 and has some of the most interesting arrangements of the usual smile songs. I especially like the extended Heroes and Villains, the foxtrot version of Wonderful with the Rock with me Henry ending and The powerful Elemental suite. This version has great dynamics and originality but also uses some clips with too much static without any effort to remove it, but thankfully this doesn't happen very often.

These are the liner notes to this album:

Our Prayer: Real stereo version and the last verse remixed with break out into laughter.

Heroes and Villains (The Barnyard Suite): This is not "Heroes and Villains". This track is new-salvage remix called "Heroes and Villains" suite made with lots of fragments. This stereo remixed version contains "I'm In Great Shape" demo verse. Constitution is different from ever make-up another suite.

Child is Father of the Man: This track contains a lot of pieces from "Child is father of The man" sessions. The first verse is the same as "Look". The second verse diverted to last verse of "Surf's Up". Break in as "Vega-Tables" tag, track move on last verse like a Jazz flavor (sic) sound.

Wonderful: Harpsichord version with "ma ma ma" chorus and "rock with me henry" verse. Ending part is smiley smile's laughing dialogue tag.

With Me Tonight: An acappella (sic) version is smiley smile sessions, but this track's end verse is never heard fast chorus on album version.

Do You Like Worms?: Real stereo version you never heard on other disc. Complete last mix with stereo sounds. And also this song is one part of "Heroes and Villains" suite.

The Old Master Painter: Real stereo version with "Barnyard part 2". This song might be included among "Heroes and Villains" suite, too.

Cabin Essence: This a long version with instrumental introduction. After "Grand coolle (sic) dam-Over the crow cries" verse, "Who run the iron horse" arrival again as ending verse.

Good Vibrations: Incredible Stereo sound! First Time On C.D.! Try to hear each channel. Maybe you can find secret of this miracle number.

Vega-Tables: Incredible arrival at first time on this C.D. Real stereo sound! Again try to hear each channel.

Wind Chimes: Beautiful marimba version with stereo sound.

The Elemental Suite: The "Elements" is still in mysteriousness. Maybe Brian construct with "Good Vibrations" " Vega-Tables" "Wind Chimes" "Look" "Holidays" "Mrs. O'leary's (sic) Cow" "I Love to say Da-da" "I wanna be around" "Friday Night" ... and other fragment from SMILE sessions. This is a puzzling suite made with lots of fragments that previously we heard.

Vega-tables reprise: Reprise with a incredible session track! This is take-2 of the session. Maybe this take is Brian's original idea for "SMILE". Because he filled up the track with a burst of laughter.

Surf's Up: Luckily you can hear heavenly sound in this version presented by Brian. This version contains four parts. The First verse is instrumental introduction as prelude for Brian's singing. Second one is incledible (sic) with Brian's lead vocal and perfect track. Third one is solo performance from "Inside Pop". Fourth one is as known as "Child is father of the man".

Brian Wilson Met John Lennon Hundreds Of Times

I was reading the blog Brian Wilsonite and laughed at this story that comes from groovyrick, who relays a story that Alice Cooper told him. Try to follow along:

I’ve seen Alice in concert a couple of times, and met him twice. The first time I met him, someone told him that I was a major Brian Wilson fan. Alice immediately smiled and stated that he was also a major fan, and a good friend of Brian’s. He also said that he had a GREAT Brian Wilson story to tell me.

From this point, I will let Alice tell the story:

“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues. During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear, ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’ So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like, ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened. About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him. As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”

Alice went on to say that he loves Brian, and later that night went with a group of people to Brian’s house and went into his studio to add and subtract instruments and passages from Beach Boys songs. I don’t know what was funnier to me…the punchline of the story, or listening to Alice Cooper try to talk like John Lennon.

The Beach Boys in Mojo Magazine

On June 15th (I'm a little late on this) Mojo Magazine released a special edition called "Mojo 60s" and the cover story was the official release (hopefully this month) of Smile!

The official version of Smile is going to be completed with the approval of Brian and will finally be mastered by some producers who know exactly what needs to be done to improve the sound on the Smile tracks to make them perfect. (I pray)

The magazine came with a single on pretty yellow vinyl. The A side was Wonderful, the B side was Cabinessence. Bionicool posted a nice video of the two songs.

Brad Cook's SMiLE Edit - Repost

This is a repost of my 3rd favorite SMiLE ever made. This one is by Brad Cook and I originally posted this May 1, 2010. This version is so psychedelic I can barely get my head around it.

It starts off with the silent hum of a 60s record... Moments later a bizarre Spanish influenced instrumental song plays several bars of a repetitive figure before violently bursting into a triumphant and unique edit of Heroes and Villains featuring the "My Children Were Raised" section of this song with the "boys and girls" backing vocals very prominent. This mix feels very authentic and I accept and consider this very close to how an official Smile release in 1967 would have sounded (namely far out, brilliant and slightly static-y).

There were some attempts made to clean up the sources for these tracks, but the creator of this mix mostly left the tracks alone, meaning if there was background hum in the original recording, you will hear it in this mix. If you like that, cool. If you don't like that, this is still a nice mix.

I also really love how vibrant Child Is The Father Of The Man sounds on this mix too. I can really hear the wood blocks and claves.

You will appreciate this mix if you download it.

This is another fan made smile with awesome high resolution scans of the original booklet! This is worth it for the booklet alone, BUT the mix is fantastic. Here is a bit of the description!

"All credit for audio quality goes to Purple Chick, Mok and Ryan Marks. I could not hope to out-do them in the remastering of these tracks.

Without doing a track-by-track, some of the highlights of this mix include:
*Improved seamless transitions between tracks, without cutting in elements from BWPS (for the hardcore vintage folks)
*I used tracks without digital edits (pitch/tempo shifts) as much as possible. (Those that may remain are not distracting)

These demos are worth owning for one reason, and one reason alone - Oh Lord. This song can best be explained by this quote from a fan site.

"Oh Lord, originally recorded in demo form during the infamous Brian/Dennis sessions at Village Recorders 81-82. After Dennis' death, Brian re-worked this track with Culture Club producer Steve Levine in July 1984 for possible inclusion on what would become "the Beach Boys" 1985. It did not make it to the final cut, and remains unreleased."

Really, this is an incredible song, and I love it to death. It still sends shivers down my spine when I hear that line "Make me sad, for everything, let me see, what there is to see." A criminally underrated Dennis Wilson song that was recorded and still remains unreleased.

Brian Loves You

In 1977 the Beach Boys needed to release a smash record. Instead, they released The Beach Boys Love You; a comical, heart warming album that is truly the last Beach Boys album that I don't skip any songs on. It's Brian Wilson's last effort as a producer.

This album that I am sharing today (with the help of my friend Reggie) is demo versions of the songs on Love You performed by Brian Wilson on the piano. Its solid gold!

Repost - 21 Little Ones

This is a repost of an album that got removed before. It's essentially a collection of Brian Wilson songs from the unreleased Sweet Insanity album, some sessions with Gary Usher and an awful attempt at a live album that is so obviously fake I literally felt offended. It originally came in .wav format, but I converted it to mp3 format and uploaded it for download below.

This is a pretty awful album (sound quality and song quality). I do really like the last 3 songs though. They are Brian Wilson solo performances of songs written around 1977. The only song officially released was I'll Bet He's Nice on the Beach Boys' 1977 album Love You.

Jeffrey Foskett The Best Of

Jeffrey Foskett has been a member of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson's band for over 30 years and has released 12 solo albums in the style of the Beach Boys. This is under the section of Beach Boys related releases.

Everybody! I have read your numerous emails and comments about reuploading lost files. I am having most of them sent to me and they will be uploaded soon. (Within 2 weeks to 4 weeks.)

I also will be uploading lots of new material, including live recordings of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys (from the 60s and 70s). I got this stuff from a friend of mine who used to be a DJ.

SMiLE - Father of the Man Mix

Hello everyone,

I am sharing a new version of SMiLE made by my buddy Sr101 (or Mike if you prefer). He describes his mix below:

"SMiLE was created in 1966 and was to be released in January of 1967. It missed that date by 37 years and when Brian Wilson finally released "SMiLE" to the world, it destroyed many people's expectations. Many have tried to decide on how the album would have sounded back in 67' and so I am here to show my version of SMiLE, which I call the "Father Of The Man Mix". All the music used on the project is owned by the Beach Boys and has been remastered and re-imagined for your listening enjoyment. The biggest enhancement on the album is the full remastering of "Child is the Father of the Man", which normally has very bad quality. My favorite tracks are Surf's Up and Child is The Father of The Man."

Hollywood Bowling!

There is a new chapter in the Cork in the Ocean Productions by DJ Rock. This one is called The Beach Boys Hollywood Bowl-ing. Its from a live show on October 19th, 1963. You can see the tracklisting and download it below.

The Beach Boys were the last act of the day for "Y-Day", sponsored by the Hollywood YMCA and local station KFWB. They were only supposed to perform three songs, but decided on-the-spot to perform "Surfer Girl" as well. They also sang a short acapella tribute to KFWB.

The date for this concert was actually October 19th, 1963, not November 1st, as widely (and incorrectly) claimed. Ads for the show indicate the 10/19 date. The ads also include the opening acts: Jan and Dean, Bobby Vinton and Duane Eddy. Art Linkletter hosted.

Album Reviews, That Lucky Old Sun and Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin

That Lucky Old Sun is Brian Wilson's eighth solo album and was released in 2008. Due to legal reasons I wasn't able to post my review of this album until this year, 2011. Happy New Year lawyers!

Anyway, That Lucky Old Sun, in addition to being Brian Wilson's 2nd newest album, was also a 1949 song written by Beasley Smith and Haven Gillespie that was covered by numerous famous singers including Frank Sinatra, Frankie Laine and Louis Armstrong. It was a huge hit at the time but has faded from popularity as time has gone by, but it appears Brian Wilson hasn't forgotten about it because he uses the song as a reoccurring theme multiple times in the album. As Brian continues to evolve as an artist he still continues to draw most of his influences from artists that were popular when he was a child.

This album is a tribute to Brian's childhood and adolescence. It pays tribute to Americana and the American experience, but more importantly it is a memorial to Wilson's own experiences driving around California and falling in love. The album was co-written with Van Dyke Parks (Smile lyricist) and Scott Bennett (from Brian's band) and the collaborative effort definitely made for a more creative album than it would have been had just Brian worked on it. Van Dyke Parks has spoken word segments in the album that make it more cinematic than most pop albums.

The album has beautiful song writing, singing and production, but moremost importantly is tremendously successful at transporting its listener from where ever they may be straight to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. I would recommend listening to this album while driving in your car alone; it's just perfect for that. This album won't get any parties started, but it might spark nostalgic conversation and some fond memories.

Brian Wilson's ninth and latest album, Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin was released last August but I wasn't able to post my review until this year. Curse the powers that be! But anyway!

This album is Brian's first album as a recording artist under Disney Records (his next album will be classic Disney covers) and that fact doesn't really have any impact on the record...oh, except for infinite $$$$$. Once again, Brian looks to the past for his inspiration for this record, recording 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs in "Brian" style and also completing two new songs from unfinished song sketches that he got from the Gershwin estate. He also wrote this record with Scott Bennett again, proving that those two guys must really like each other or something!

The album definitively proves that Brian cares about George Gershwin and wants to make his music more accessible to a larger group of people. He faithfully recreates these songs and the whole album is really enjoyable. I especially like the songs "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "The Like In I Love You", and "I Got Rhythm". Those songs are all really up-beat and very modern.

I want to mention that Brian Wilson was originally the producer of this album, but apparently Disney wasn't 100% sure about Brian's good ear, because they hired big-shot record producer Al Schmitt (he produced records for Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane and plenty more) to remix the whole album. I wonder if anyone will leak the original Brian Wilson mix of this album?

New Lexingtons Double LP

I don't know if you know this, but I have been recording Beacn Boys inspired music under the name The Lexingtons since 2007 and I have just finished my second release, a double album with disc 1 called "Isn't It Nice To Be Loved?" and disc 2 called "Choose Choice".

I really hope that you will download these albums and give them a chance. There are 35 songs in total that I have been working on for years to release. The first disc is traditional pop songs and the second disc is shorter, more experimental instrumental "mood" music that is designed to be put on repeat.

I was just looking on youtube for good videos of the Beach Boys with John Stamos in them, when I discovered this video of the Beach Boys (Mike Love's Beach Boys) doing a medley of 3 of their hit songs along with special guest star Mike Love's short-breathed, out-of-tune, uninspired singing.

And his vocals really are the unexpected guest star of this performance. His singing was so bad that it takes on a life of its' own. You can actually hear the audience cheer when Mike Love ends his slaughtering of the verses to California Girls, Kokomo and Fun, Fun, Fun and his younger, fuller-lunged backing band pull off those vocal harmonies that he [Mike Love] used to be such an important part of [in the original Beach Boys].

I know this aired on March 30, 2010 and I'm sorry, but I don't watch Dancing With The Stars for this exact sort of reason.

The Man From Another Place's First Video

Hello everyone,

The greatest thing that I listened to last year was The Loneliest Cowboy EP, the debut release from The Man From Another Place; brain-child of Scottish composer Daniel Hirst. I really love The Loneliest Cowboy EP so much that I listen to it for inspiration when it comes time for me to start recording my own music. It really is like every band that I love combined into one simple package. It has the compositional skill of a Heavy Blinkers song with the catchiness of a Beach Boys tune, without any vocals, which, in my opinion leaves room for you to ponder on the meaning of the songs with just your own imagination as reference.

The video stars Ron Smith and Abbra Smallwood and is directed by Justin Hannah, a director from Lexington, KY. The description of the video reads "Alone in the darkness, a man is haunted by a memory, warm, shimmering and beautiful". I couldn't agree more, so I am happy to share his first of what I know will be several, music videos. =]

AL JARDINE - AN INTERVENTION

Al Jardine, if you're reading this, please take a seat here among your friends. All I see is a room full of people who love you like crazy, but they're afraid they're losing you. They're scared because they see you going down the wrong path and hanging out with the wrong crowd and they just want to see you get better.

Your new album, A Postcard From California, is a real accomplishment for a little boy from Lima, Ohio. From the first time we heard your voice on Help Me, Rhonda to the next time we heard you balladeer on Then I Kissed Her, we were all hooked! Maybe some people thought of you as the least interesting Beach Boy, but the truly intelligent people saw you as the smart Beach Boy; the one who managed to avoid negative press almost completely (a huge accomplishment for a Beach Boy).

Yes, you were always the voice of reason and sanity; the reliable one! But as the years have gone on I've started to notice a change in you. I need to tell you this Al, before its too late and you can never stop.

You are addicted to writing bad Country laced Rock and Roll songs.

SONG: Susie Cincinatti
PROBLEM: Writing a song about a "Troubled Adolescant Girl"
PROOF ITS BAD: It was released as the B Side to 3 different singles from 1970-76. And these lyrics:

"Her looks aren't exactly a plus
but it doesn't matter to us...

She got the nicotine fit
And before she discovered it
Everybody in the back seat suffocated"

SONG: Lady Lynda
PROBLEM: "The lyrics to the song refer to Jardine's then-wife, Lynda Jardine. After the two divorced, the song was rewritten as "Lady Liberty", a tribute to the Statue of Liberty."
PROOF ITS BAD: Admittedly, this song charted at #39 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary Charts in June 1979 because it tried to achieve that AM Easy Listening Gold sound, but it failed in comparison to the #1 song at that time, Anne Murray's Shadows In The Moonlight (which you can hear here).

And now that your new album is coming out I can see that your problem has only gotten worse. I mean, you have the opportunity to make an album so incredible, so stupendous, so mind-altering that for the rest of eternity all Beach Boys fans would say "I never suspected it, but Al Jardine's solo album really is just the greatest record of all time."

You can still get it back! The passion that you've lost while you were busy "Looking Down The Coast", "Honkin' Down The Highway", "Driving" and "Feeling" and "Dreaming" California. You get it? While you're busy thinking about geography and driving your car (which is killing that geography you love so much) you're forgetting all about what people want to hear.

It's like this, you are covering songs that we all heard 40 or 50 years ago and covering them sub-par at that! Just look at this video you did for your cover of Help Me, Rhonda.

Just stop it! Start over, completely from scratch. Sit down at your piano and play a FM7 chord with a D bass note and just hold it for 15 seconds. You feel that? That's an incredible chord to start with. Now go grab Crosby, Stills, Nash, Steve Miller, Flea, David Marks, Brian Wilson, Mike love, John Stamos, Rebecca Romijn Stamos and your family and I want you to go into that home studio and don't come out until you're sure your album could make Beethoven cry from jealousy.

It's not impossible Al! You don't have to keep making these same mistakes. I just want to tell you to be the best you can be, Al. I care about you and I want to like you and your music, and maybe after this intervention you'll finally be able to make that perfect album.

SMiLE - The New Master Painter Mix

Hello again everyone,

I'm actually very excited to share this new and different mix of SMiLE. I really enjoyed listening to this one, and I'm pretty sure you will too. Read the description and download below.

SMiLE - The New Master Painter Mix

My initial goal with this mix was to present the closest possible version to a 1967 album line up of SMiLE. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's all mono because it's a safe bet that Brian would have mixed the album in mono had it been finished back then. I did quite a bit of research and reading on every possible subject relating to the music and the time period to put me in the right frame of mind (quick plug for Domenic Priore's amazing "Story of Brian Wilson's Masterpiece SMILE"). That said, I didn't want to make a mix that anybody else had already done so more often than not, I took the road less traveled. Is it perfect? Hell no. Complete? Not by a long shot. But I hope listening to this wonderful music in this sequence will somehow move you in a positive way. - NMP

Our Prayer/Gee
Taken from the GV box set with a little touch from the Vigotone. I think the laughter towards the end of "Prayer" really lightens up the mood from the get go. It also helps the transition from the 'serious' choral type music to more fun 50's style doo-wop. The album is called SMiLE after all... you have to have laughter.

Heroes & Villains
Essentially the Smiley Smile version with the 'Cantina' section edited in from the GV box and SOT 17. Followed the 2004 edit for the most part with a few exceptions towards the end. I decided to skip the repeat of the chorus. This was slightly inspired by one of Brian's "edit attempts" heard on the Vigotone set. There's an extra "mmm" after the "ahh" before the conclusion. This, as well as the strings and whistle ending are from the original sessions. This section leads us into the barnyard suite.

I'm In Great Shape
I could be wrong, but I believe this is from Jason Penick's wonderful mix of Smile. This is the only time I used anything that was digitally manipulated in my mix. Jason was able to do it rather smoothly which is not easy by any means. If I didn't have this, one of the instrumental versions from Secret Smile would probably appear in its place.

Barnyard
A re-edit of the Vigotone mix. Not exactly the same structure as the 2004 version but close.

The Old Master Painter/My Only Sunshine
Someone's clever mix of SOT 17 and Vigotone. I found it amidst all my Smile stuff that I have piled up. I neglected to label the CD it was on so apologies to whomever deserves the credit for it. The fade is actually an edit of three different versions/mixes. The intro is my own creation taken from the Heroes & Villains sessions boot while the main body of the song is from the GV box and Secret Smile. There's a noticeable jump (to me at least) in audio quality from one mix to the other. Sometimes you have sacrifice quality for quantity. As far as I know, Secret Smile is the only place one can find a mix of this with Mike Love's faint lead vocal in tact. My guess is that his vocal was probably wiped somewhere along the interim.

Do You Like Worms
The 2004 arrangement of this was top notch. Compare my edit to your BWPS CD's and you'll notice that I followed it almost to the letter (taking several civil liberties, of course). Note how the "natives" come in before the second chorus. Left Brian's extra "Mahalo" in towards the end because it made me chuckle.

Cabinessence
I'm quite proud of this one. Most folks tend to use the 20/20 version as is but the ADT on Carl's lead vocal made it sound rather weird when I folded the track down to mono. It was then that I decided to make this song sound more mid 60s authentic. I used whatever original rough mixes from the time period I could dig up from various sources. They have that nice punchy quality that really make the song pop out of the radio (most noticeably on the chorus). I personally think this sounds more appropriate to the era it was created in than the mix appearing on 20/20 does. I hope you agree.

He Gives Speeches
From the SOT boot, speed corrected. I added a fade section following a three note bass line that I ripped off from Ryan Guidry's amazing fan mix. However I added some 60's style slapback echo to these bass notes to make it sound more like a true solo.

Wonderful
Taken from the GV box set version. The repeated line at the end was inspired by the way Carl Wilson performed the song in concert during the 70s (when the group was planning on finishing the Smile album for release). I liked the way it made the ending slightly more climatic, happy yet in a sad way. Some more editing and cross fading leads us into...

Look
Edited down from Mok's mix of Smile.

Child Is Father of The Man
Taken from the Vigotone boot and re-edited to fit the 2004 arrangement. There's fan mixes that have added vocals but I like the bare bones sound of this track. It makes the following track seem even more climatic. It took me a while to come up with a decent transition to end it with before I stumbled upon the session for "Surf's Up" where the percussionist and Brian are trying to get the right sound and eureka! Similar to the transition that Brian and band used for "Child..." into "Surf's Up" when performing Smile live in 2004. The bass at the end of this track also adds a nice touch of R&B to the mosaic.

Surf's Up
From the Surf's Up album completely unaltered besides being folded down to mono. I may catch grief for not using Brian's vocal over the 60s backing track. Truth is, I have never heard a mix of the two that really convince me. My ears detect too much digital manipulation of Brian's vocal. He's obviously playing at a different tempo in spots and one has to digitally stretch his vocal to make it fit. Nobody can touch him singing this song, but Carl did a great job putting this track together in the 70s.

Holidays
A nice breather after the drama of "Surf's Up". This either came off Secret Smile or Vigotone. Only thing I added to it was the fade out.

Wind Chimes
Based upon Jason Penick's mix of this track but with some additions from me to make it slightly more cohesive. Mostly from GV box set and Archaeology.

Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
My own mix but based on Ryan Guidry's.

Love To Say Dada
My own mix created by following the 2004 arrangment until the ending where I added on a tag from the Heroes & Villains sessions boot (slightly sped down to match the pitch of "Dada").

I Wanna Be Around/Friday Night
Domenic Priore and others still claim this is the "rebuilding after the fire" in addition to being "the repairing of the broken heart". Thus, in the interest of accuracy, I have adjusted the sequence of songs as such. The workshop section is actually taken from the 2004 version of smile since it had the original sound effects (and sounded better than the original recording, mix wise, when folded down to mono). You might not have even noticed this if I didn't tell you. Another tricky transition (that I hopefully pulled off) into...

Vega-Tables
From GV box set, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Archeology, and Mok's mix. This one was the most tricky of them all. As usual, I followed the 2004 arrangement but added my own touches along the way (Listen closely for a little bit of "Mama Says" from the Wild Honey album). While I was creating this mix, I kept in mind that this track was planned to be a single and that it should be both commercial and yet completely out of left field (like "Good Vibrations"). I consider this a worthy 'single mix' if you will. Long slow fade out and then...

Good Vibrations
I doubt that anybody who listens to this mix hasn't heard "Good Vibrations". Therefore, I added one or two things to make my GV both familiar and new. The original lyrics (as well as Carl's wonderful lead vocal) are still left in tact. However, be prepared for one or two small surprises that hopefully won't ruin it for you and, more than anything, make you SMiLE.

Hi Beach Boy fans,

Sorry I haven't updated in a few months; I've had no internet. But now that I do have access to the web again I checked my email and found this mix of smile sent from reader Brad Cook. His description of his mix and tracklisting are below.

I've had a few ideas for a while so it only took an afternoon to edit this all together. Granted, I've omitted quite a few songs. Good Vibrations doesn't belong in my book, so it's out. Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine, Friday Night and Barnyard are all dropped as they don't do much or go anywhere to me.
Also, I've opted to use Hawthorne versions of Heroes & Villains and Vega-tables which are Smiley Smile takes. Sacrilege maybe, they are better versions i think, particularly this version of Heroes and Villains is better than the cantina version that many people favor.
I've also opted continue to have the suites as the Americana/Cycle of Life/Elements.

Someone needs to help the Help For Haiti song

The song "We Are The World" was redone by Lionel Richie, and re-recorded for Haiti relief. It features lots of terrible teen sensations (Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, lots of American Idol people), and even a posthumous duet from Michael Jackson with Janet. Oh. If you can stomach it and listen towards the end, you can even hear T-Pain's completely autotuned voice. And a rap breakdown at the end.

But during shots of the chorus, you can see our boys Brian Wilson and Al Jardine in salmon colored shirts, singing along with those losers. Rise above, boys. They didn't even give them a solo!

But hey, at least it's for a good cause.

66/67 SMiLE with HI-RES booklet!

This is another fan made smile with awesome high resolution scans of the original booklet! This is worth it for the booklet alone, BUT the mix is fantastic. Here is a bit of the description!

"All credit for audio quality goes to Purple Chick, Mok and Ryan Marks. I could not hope to out-do them in the remastering of these tracks.

Without doing a track-by-track, some of the highlights of this mix include:
*Improved seamless transitions between tracks, without cutting in elements from BWPS (for the hardcore vintage folks).
*I used tracks without digital edits (pitch/tempo shifts) as much as possible. (Those that may remain are not distracting.)
*Perhaps best of all, a hi-res reconstruction of the original Smile booklet is included. (I used 150 dpi for the attached jpeg's, which are perfect for printing. I have larger files if you want, though.) The pages are arranged in PRINT ORDER, and are numbered and arranged for back-to-back printing as they are. I hope the order is obvious, but file "1-16" means page 1 (the front cover) and page 16 (the back cover) and prints on the back of file "2-15" and so on. I can elaborate if need be."

Life's A Beach Series 15 - Remember the Zoo?/Christmas album

As a working title for Pet Sounds, Remember The Zoo probably lasted all of an afternoon… but according to an article in the July 1994 issue of the highly regarded Beach Boys Australia fanzine, it was in fact the title of an album set to have been released between Party and Pet Sounds itself but, for reasons unspecified, shelved. Penned by someone sheltering behind the pen name 'The Correct Perspective' (someone who claimed to be a confidante of Brian's from the earliest days), the article was full of fascinating information: "I'm In Great Shape" predated its commonly held Smile origins - as did "Tones" - and eventually mutated into the B side of Brian's 1988 "Love & Mercy" single... both "Trombone Dixie" and "Pet Sounds" had lyrics written for them (by Brian)... and so on. All fascinating stuff.
And, of course, all complete nonsense.

The Heavy Blinkers Release A Christmas Song

The Heavy Blinkers return with a Christmas song from their highly anticipated new album "HEALTH".

"Silence Your Drum" is the new Christmas song from The Heavy Blinkers and the first glimpse at their forthcoming double album, Health. The song is the story of the fabled little drummer boy, as told through the perspective of Joseph & Mary. The song features lead vocals from Jenn Grant backed the group's trade-mark lush orchestral arrangements.

Recently named one of "The Greatest Bands You've (Probably) Never Heard' by Spin magazine (July 2009), The Heavy Blinkers' long awaited Health includes contributions from renowned artists such as Sondre Lerche(Astralwerks) and Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas (Drag City). The album will be released in March, 2010.

I'm convinced that this is not really a Christmas song at all. It's more like asking the question "What if the Little Drummer Boy had annoyed Jesus and his parents instead of making them joyful with his snare?" It seems that after traveling through the night with his drum our drummer boy just can't ever do enough for the baby he is trying to impress. It seems The Heavy Blinkers don't like to look at the bright side of the situations they sing about, even Christmas.

However, the story Jason MacIsaac invents in the song is very poetic and fully thought out. I'd also like to mention how beautifully the Heavy Blinkers new vocalist Jenn Grant is (I'm not quite sure if she is their full time lead singer yet, but when you sing lead on more than 3 songs you might as well be the lead singer). But it is the production of this single that makes it shine as bright as it does! It just sounds amazing; the balance between the vocals and instruments of the music is as precise as a Mozart Symphony (and perhaps just as big).

It goes without saying that the music in this song is more spectacular than most other songs that try to pass themselves off as Christmas singles. The Heavy Blinkers have put together something great this Holiday season that will regrettably get far less listens than it deserves. I'm amazed to believe that The Heavy Blinkers still keep getting better, even after the loss of founding members Andrew Watt and Ruth Minnikin.

It's clear that Jason MacIsaac is what made the Heavy Blinkers so wonderful on their first 4 albums, and from the looks of things, he will continue to lead his Heavy Blinkers until they are bigger than even Christmas itself.

Silence Your Drum is a bit unexpected, but a very exciting peak into what could be the best album of 2010, The Heavy Blinkers' "HEALTH".

Smile - Mok's version

Mok's Smile is one of the best versions of Smile, but instead of having me describe it you should instead read his description below.

Here's a rough idea of what's on this disc and the work that went into it:

1 - Our Prayer
This is a synchronization of the beautiful stereo mix with the mono mix found on bootleg (which I believe is a more coherent sound).

2 - Heroes and Villains
This is an amalgamation of all of the great pieces of Heroes, in an order I find appealing. There are attempts at increasing the clarity of the mix made by using the isolated vocal tracks from Sea of Tunes synchronized with the main mono track (making a rough stereo). Longer than I would like (8:00) but I feel complete by the end. (probably 3rd most worked-on)

3 - Barnyard
Pitch matched the instrumental track from bootleg with the demo piano and vocal from the GV box. It fits, amazingly, although a considerable amount of elbow grease was applied.

4 - I'm In Great Shape
The 'waking up' sounds of H&V sections mixed into the actual wakeup "mornings tumble out of bed..." vocal/piano demo by Brian (a bit cleaned up).

5 - Do You Like Worms
IMHO, the right pieces in the right order, this track sounds amazing. I believe one of the finer sounding tracks, 99% in stereo. Vocal clarity was obtained by mixing splits (again) into the stereo track.

6 - Child is the Father of the Man
Hard to get great quality, since most of the material comes from acetates, but I mixed several different 'takes' and 'remakes' of this song into one, satisfying another completions urge. Nobody's thought of *this* yet. Lots of work went into this (probably 4th most worked-on).

7 - Look
Not much editing, just judicial eq to clean up - the sequencing of this song and the next are key.

8 - Good Vibrations
A GV 'greatest hits' edit - the best parts of this song mixed as if it was whole. Now I hear this edit when I hear this song on the radio (and it hasn't ruined it). Find it in your heart to forgive my hacks, I think it's worth it.

9 - Holidays
Segueing out of GV, Holidays is not edited, just cleaned up as well. This track and Look were 'done' IMHO. A clever way in and out of GV.

10 - The Old Master Painter
A tough edit of the stereo instrumental with the mono vocal mix. These do not sync up well, but my crossfades take care of the wonky-ness.

11 - He Gives Speeches
Padded at the beginning and faded out at the end, a minor touch-up to the "beginning of side 2" (for me).

12 - Wonderful
The version from the box set, unaltered. This is beautiful, and never should be messed with.

13 - I Love to Say Da-Da
I know, I know, Cool Cool Water isn't Da-Da, but I felt this made a better flowing track with the two edited together (water chant drops in the middle).

14 - Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
H&V intro is Fire. This segues quite nicely into Cow, and that dies out.

15 - Friday Night
After the craziness, the 'rebuilding' smoothness comes in. Stereo Version was cleaner, sorry for the right channel only woodwork. (Woodwork is always in mono!)

16 - Reprise
A reprise of the H&V theme, with no H&V-specific vocal. I thought it went well here. A cleaned-up edit and fade makes it leaner, but still nice.

17 - Vega-Tables
This was just love from the beginning. This plays everything I want to hear of Veg, with only a slight weird phasing that could not be avoided. So many sections with so many edits, this was probably the most intensive editing on the project. Mostly stereo (where it counts) and I 'never was lazy' putting it together.

18 - Wind Chimes
Almost the same edit as on the box set, but using stereo sources from the bootlegs for (better?) sound.

19 - CabinEssence
This incorporates the 'instrumental' sections from the boots (I can't ever go without hearing that) with the completed Carl vocal version from the box set. I cleaned up some of the vocals on this track so they stand out a little more.

20 - You're Welcome
Regardless of the intent, I couldn't resist putting this on there. Very little work involved, but it might be noticeable to others...

21 - George Fell Into His French Horn
I clipped a small section of this because I heard the segue from this track to the next in my head months before attempting this project. It makes me laugh and works in a way you would never expect.

22 - Surf's Up
One of the hardest things to work on in the project and ultimately the most rewarding. I love the stereo backing track, but wait, there's now Brian's demo vocal (and only Brian) in sync! Pitch correction, time compression, whatever it took, I had to do it just to see if it could be done. This was the whole inspiration for the project, and the last thing I worked on. Try not to cry when you hear it the first time. Goosebumps every time.

Ultimately it's too long and overstuffed to be an 'album', but there never was an album, and this is my way to feel totally complete with Smile (if one ever can). -Mok

Endless Bummer - The Worst of the Beach Boys [1977]

In the tradition of bootlegs trailblazed by the legendary Elvis' Greatest Shit, here we have a compilation of about 50 minutes of the Beach Boys' most embarrassing moments to have been captured on tape. It goes without saying that this is not only not for the average Beach Boys fan, but not even for many Beach Boys fans who collect the group's unreleased material. Instead, it's something only for the completist, or those with a somewhat masochistic sense of humor. But if you are intent on investigating the most disagreeable skeletons in the group's closet, many of them are here, including really drunk (and long post-prime) vocals on live versions of "Good Vibrations" and "You're So Beautiful"; shamefully exploitative Mike Love-sung ads; a Carl Wilson anti-drug radio spot; Brian Wilson's infamous solo rap song "Smart Girls"; a Spanish version of their unloved comeback hit "Kokomo"; the notorious mid-'60s outtakes in which Murry Wilson rips into his sons and the rest of the group at a recording session; a bad Bob Dylan imitation/parody by Mike Love; and various ragged rehearsal tapes/outtakes. Actually, this material is more interesting than many a mediocre group's best efforts, as a band this good couldn't help from letting some talent, ingenuity, and humor seep through even when they were at their most painfully inept. But relative to the standards of the Beach Boys' usual work -- and even relative to the standards of many Beach Boys bootlegs -- it's oft-painful listening, with some historical interest for those cataloging the band's oft-dysfunctional history, but little entertainment value. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

In Concert

I just got home from seeing Brian Wilson in concert for the first time.

The concert was in Northampton, MA at the Calvin Theater on King Street. Overall I had a very good time, so let me talk about it a bit.

As I came in after reserving my 75 dollar ticket I realized that I was one of the few people at the concert in their 20s. The vast majority of fans, at least at this concert were all middle aged to elderly men and women. I'm glad that his fans are so diverse, but I still felt a little odd seated between 2 women old enough to be my grandmother.

But when Brian and his abridged 8 piece band (which they call "The Crazy Eight") came out on stage the crowd was very excited to see the man they had come for, and so was I. I never imagined I would really see him in person, and being that close to him was kind of odd really. I found myself noticing things like his legs and thinking "He walks just like I do"...very odd things indeed.

They played through a string of Brian Wilson classics including "I Get Around", "Help, Me Rhonda", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Sloop John B", "God Only Knows", "Dance, Dance, Dance" and quite a few of their rarer songs like "Marcella" and "Drive-In". However, after premiering his newest solo album That Lucky Old Sun on his last tour, he seems less excited to be promoting that album on his current tour. The band only played 2 songs from Brian's upcoming album.

I found it odd that Darian was missing from the band, along with quite a few other important members like Taylor Mills and any mention of a string section or horn player. Everything was handled on keyboards sadly.

However, the defining moment of the show is when Brian finally stands up from his unused keyboard (except to play a very short version of "Row, row, row your boat") and plays bass guitar for the classic Beach Boys cover of Barbara Ann. Very exciting stuff to see Brian rock out with his bass and do the classic guitar dance with the other bassist. (I wonder why Brian needs a bassist when he plays too).

It's nice to see a pop legend still trying hard to get out and play some concerts. Although he may not have known the name of the city or perhaps even what he was doing sometimes, I can say I saw him perform at least once in my life. There is a certain amount of prestige that comes with that.

I also bought this shirt, it cost $30.

I helped produce this version and I think we are both proud to share it with all of you. It was arranged to reflect the original 12 track version of SMiLE that Brian Wilson had planned in 1966. We also worked very hard to make the sound crystal clear.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to keep in touch.

I haven't updated this in a while, mainly because I caught a nasty virus that messed up my computer bad a couple weeks ago. I've got it all fixed up now and it's good to go.

Did you know when you search google for "beach boys blog", my site comes up first? Cool eh?

Anyway! I don't really have anything new to post. But I will be reuploading all of my beach boys photos again. (I found the CD I stored them on)

Remember last month when I started that sheet music project? That was WAY too ambitious. I may end up doing some more soon, but I just wanted to say sorry if you were getting excited about it (or angry or something).

Anyway, I'll keep this blog updated as bootlegs or news appear. I also wanted to tell everyone that Wrightfan and I have been working on a new version of smile using his new line up with me doing some production and clean up work. It's going to be really awesome.

Unfortunately now that I have a job (and I'm pretty obsessed with my own recordings for this band I've been working on) things are moving pretty slow. But I assure you it will get done and its going to impress you all!

However, some static and awkward starts (for instance, the start of Holidays) make for a rather bland listen, but it still contains quite a few rare tracks and a couple of cool, unique mixes. SMiLE Sheet Music

Hi there everyone!

My next post on this blog is going to be more of a project (similar to the one sentence reviews and how it took me a few days to finish it), but this time I will be posting sheet music from the original SMiLE album (because someone asked me to do it).

Perhaps some of you remember that I was working on a documentary a few months back? Well I gave up on it, mostly because my laptop is not good enough to handle making movies and doesn't have the storage that I need to hold all of those clips and sound bites. I tried, but it ended up near destroying my computer. However, it could still happen in the future if i get bored enough and/or inspired enough!

ANYWAY!

This is going to be a mammoth undertaking to figure out songs, sheet music-ify them, and post them here. (It's a lot of HTML!) So please bear with me for a while. I will be taking the MIDI files from the Project Smile disc and using a program called MidiNotate to notate them to sheet music. Please note, the sheet music is not perfect (for example, piano tracks are limited to either the bass or treble clef only, not both), so for that I apologize. I still hope a lot of you musicians will be able to get something out of this!

The Beach Boys, The Devil and Insane Rants

Now usually I will inform you of some kind of interesting news, or link you to some kind of download. However, that will not happen today! Today I am going to share with you some epic laughs.

Through searching the web I ran across a website run by a religious fanatic named David J. Stewart. He continually rants about the Beach Boys supposed connection to the devil and the evils of rock and roll music in general (did this guy ever see Foot Loose?).

Alternate Brian Wilson Presents Smile

A great version of Smile presented in 3 movements. This one is particularly great for having plenty of studio talking in it (mixed perfectly and appropriately of course), humor and mixing songs of the same key into each other creating a mix of smile that is far more creative than any I've heard before. He also took a note from Stephen Newcombe's cover of Surf's Up (you'll hear what I mean). I know you'll love this version of Smile, so go ahead and download it.

Carl Wilson Solo Albums

Released in 1981 on Caribou Records, the Self titled album Carl Wilson is filled with all good songs and amazing singing from the voice of the man who sang God Only Knows. However, most of this albums sounds like it is straight from 1970's Top 40 radio, with songs that all sound like unreleased tracks from the archives of Chicago or Peter Frampton.

In my opinion, Carl Wilson's first album is a perfect soft rock album with a bit of an edge, but very monotonous to listen to at times. I would recommend this if you like that style of music, but the stand out track on the album, Heaven, is so gorgeous I could listen to it all month; it's a tremendous song and a huge tear jerker. The entire album is EASILY worth that one song.

Released 2 years later, Youngblood is Carl's second and final solo album. It has a heavier sound on most of the tracks than the previous album, but still sounds a lot like Chicago (just the 80s Chicago as opposed to the 70s Chicago). Youngblood is better than Carl's previous album though; it is much more diverse, with songs ranging from pure Rockers to acoustic ballads and even touching on Country music and 80s style synths. My personal favorite song is the fairy tale-esque One More Night Alone.

I've also included 4 bonus tracks. The 4 extra songs include 2 unreleased tracks from the first and second Carl Wilson album, a track from Carl's "supergroup" he formed with Robert Lamm of Chicago and Gerry Backley of America and one amazing demo song "An Angel's voice". I really like all 4 of these bonus tracks, especially An Angel's Voice. It has great chords and is very touching - I just wish he had released it with harmonies and a good prodcution.

I've been asked these kinds of questions so many times I decided I would write some quick one sentence reviews of every Beach Boys album. I intend to answer at least 2 or those 3 questions and hopefully encourage newer fans to go out and buy some of the less known Beach Boys greats, or maybe you'll just like to know what I think of all these albums! Either way, I have way too much time on my hands so enjoy yourself!

(1962) Pretty good for a first album at the time; lots of fun classic early Beach Boys songs - my favorite being County Fair.

(1963) The follow up wasn't quite as fun as the original and is filled with way too many instrumental tracks, but some gems like Lonely Sea, Shut Down and Cindy, Oh Cindy make this one enjoyable...sometimes.

RIP Tony Carbone

I wanted to write about my extreme sadness over the passing of one of the great pop geniuses of our time, Tony Carbone of the band Bikeride. For over ten years Bikeride has been releasing classic album after classic album and their latest album The Kiss ended up being the final album from the band.

According to a flyer for a benefit show a month before his death "Tony Carbone is a 34-year old elementary teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District. Two years ago, Tony was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma (the most aggressive and life threatening form of skin cancer), which spread to his brain. …Tony and his wife have nowhere to turn. Tony’s Avastin cycle, recommended by his doctor, will cost $30K. Tony’s family and friends are organizing a fund raiser to help pay for the cost.”[1]

Sadly, Tony didn't make it and passed away on March 6, 2008. I had asked Tony for an interview on my Pop Music blog before he passed, but unfortunately I never got the chance to talk with him in depth. But even still I hope to do a recap of their music and albums soon.

Fast Eddie's Smile

Earlier I had posted a download to a version I thought was Fast Eddie's Smile. Turns out I was wrong! The real Fast Eddie emailed me and corrected me, so now I am happy to share the REAL Fast Eddie's Smile. His version is very, very good (based on the 2004 Brian Wilson Presents Smile) and high quality as well at 192 kbps mp3. Its a good add on to your Beach Boys collection.

Now that Brian Wilson completed, performed and re-recorded his lost masterpiece, comparisons with the original 1966/1967 session recordings are made. For my own satisfaction, I compiled and edited a version of SMiLE using only 66/67 vintage recordings, but following the arrangement of the 2004 concerts and re-recording. The results are here for your listening pleasure. They are not meant to be a substitution of the 2004 re-recording in any way.

Generally, the differences with the 2004 re-recording are:
- most of the segues are missing
- some songs don't have vocals as these weren't recorded in 66/67 - or if they were, they haven't been unearthed yet
- to emphasize the unfinished nature of the "original" recordings, I used the old "working" titles for some now re-titled songs.
- some tracks may have a few differences in arrangement, because of their wildly unfinished nature in 66/67

Some technical notes regarding this "reconstruction":
- I used the best available lossless sources (most original silver CDs), except for a few short pieces where only mp3 was available; eventually, I managed to complete it using only just over 1 minute of mp3-sourced music
- for editing, re-arranging, balancing of sound, mixing to mono where applicable and a bit of eq-ing, I used AUDACITY - a cool piece of software that does exactly what's needed for the challenge at hand, without demanding too much technical/musical knowledge - see http://audacity.sourceforge.net for more info and downloads
- if you're going to burn it, don't forget to use a 'no pause'-preference, as I've specifically aimed at seamless flow wherever possible
- some tracks are sped up or down a bit. Regarding the "right speed", I followed the guidelines as advocated by Ryan Guidry in the notes to his superb "old-skool" SMiLE edit (unfortunately only available in MP3)

Oh, feel free to pass it on, but it would be nice if proper credits are attached. If I ever catch anyone trying to make a buck out of this... Fast Eddie's fatwah will rest upon you!

1. Our Prayer - Gee 1:59

I used the 20/20-version of PRAYER because I prefer it over the "early" 1966 version. GEE of course is part of the 'Heroes And Villians [Sessions]' track on the boxed set that can also be found on Vigitone SMiLE and other bootlegs.

2. Heroes And Villains 4:34

3. Do You Like Worms 3:41

Though this synchronization of the 'Heroes And Villains' demo vocals with the instrumental tracks isn't exactly according to 2004 arrangement, it is by far the best sync-job I've heard, so I used it. All props to MOK! Only change is I faded it out early to better flow "on-the-one" into...

Mok synced the stereo instrumental with the mono vocal bootleg mixes. Can't improve it, so once again all props to him!

I used the intro from UM-16. This isn't exactly right according to the 2004 arrangement, but since it's impossible to re-create the Song For Children > CITFOTM transition and this intro makes it flow much better, I decided to use it. The rest of the track is from Mok's SMiLE, but I re-arranged the parts to better fit the new arrangement.
By the way: check out Mic Luv's CITFOTM that is uncannily similar to the 2004 arrangement, but unfortunately only available in MP3.

10. Surf's Up 4:11

First part is Mok's perfect synchronization of demo vocals over 1966-stereo track, remainder is 1971 album version.

11. Great Shape, etc. 1:56

First up is a part of the 'Heroes And Villains' Demo, segueing into the recently unearthed Great Shape tracking (actually, my edit is a combination of 2 attempts featured on the Psychedelic Sounds disc - MP3 sourced!). Finally, we have the regular I WANNA BE AROUND - FRIDAY NIGHT from UM-16, but sped up a bit (most sources are mastered too slow) and mixed to mono.

12. Vega-Tables 2:15

Most of this track is the boxed set version, but the double 'SLEEP-A-LOT'-insert is from Mok's SMiLE and the vocal coda is from the Smiley version.

Most of this track is the clean and superb sounding Mok version, but it's sped down a bit (in fact most sources are mastered a bit too fast). The WHISPERING WINDS coda is from the Wind Chimes remix on the Stereo Smiley Smile / Wild Honey disc (MP3 sourced!).

14. Wind Chimes 2:47

Again, I used Mok's version for best sound, but I re-edited it, shortening the bridge and repeating the chorus like it was performed in 2004. The final verse/chorus is from the "complete instrumental take 5" on Unsurpassed Masters Vol.17.

15. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow 2:30

What can I say? Best sounding version, IMHO!
I didn't try to sync the Fall Breaks chanting onto this, because I didn't believe it could work (I heard 1 or 2 attempts at this and found these close to unlistenable). No use of the "real fire"-effects too, as Brian didn't in 2004!

16. I Love To Say Da Da 2:24

The WATER CHANT plus the backing track to what's now known as BLUE HAWAII. The second part is also available on the Good Vibrations boxed set.

17. Good Vibrations 4:20

My pride and joy! I expected this not to work, but I think it turned out rather good. The intro and the choruses are from the 45 version, as is the first part of the bridge ("Got to keep those loving good vibrations..."). The verses are from the early take (Tony Asher's vocals!). The second part of the bridge ("hum-de-dum") is from the Hawthorne, CA rarities collection (mixed to mono!). At the end, I used the ending of the full backing track version that closes the 'tracking sessions' on disc 5 of the boxed set; instead of quickly fading out like the 45 version, it repeats the instrumental chorus a few times before ending rather suddenly. I found that a fitting end, because of course I couldn't re-create the climaxing drum rolls of the concert version. By the way: Brian ends the 2004 studio version with a simple fade-out, which is a damn shame I think!"

Mike Love vs. Al Jardine Lawsuit Settled

According to more than a few news sources (here, here, here and here), the legal battle between Mike Love and Al Jardine over the use of the Beach Boys name has finally come to an end.

I currently have no idea how may lawsuits there are going on between the various members and ex-members of the Beach Boys (perhaps no one does) but I can now say there is one less. The details of the story are extremely vague, but I think Al Jardine came out on top, which is good enough for me!

Anyway, let's hope this small resolution can inspire the world to a greater need for peace, or something like that...

Nelson Bragg - Day Into Night

There comes a point in every long standing band's career where its members feel the need to break out and start a solo career. All the members of KISS did it, Led Zeppelin did it (except for their ill fated drummer, John Bonham, of course) and The Beach Boys did it too.

Most notably is Beach Boy Brian Wilson's solo career. Since 1988 Brian Wilson has been releasing a string of solo albums to great reviews. However, Brian Wilson scarcely played live until assembling his own live band to accurately play his complex instrumental and vocal harmony sections featured on his studio albums. For almost a decade Brian and his band has been touring the world performing Brian's works including Pet Sounds, Smile and his latest work That Lucky Old Sun.

All of the members of Brian Wilson's live band are incredible musicians, each with their own background and musical history. You may recognize Nelson Bragg as one of the percussionists of the band, frequently performing behind Wilson and surrounded by an arsenal of drums, cymbals, tambourines and various other instruments. But besides Bragg's gig with Brian Wilson he is also a member of several other bands in the pop scene including The Wondermints, The Now People, The Quarter After and Cloud Eleven.

Despite Bragg's extremely busy schedule he still managed to go the route of so many band members before him and release his first solo album, Day Into Night, at the tender age of 44. As with any album from an accomplished musician and multi instrumentalist, Day Into Night shines with great song writing, fantastic harmonies and a maturity that often takes artists decades to develop.

Initially, the album sounds very similar to artists like Barenaked Ladies and other pop folk fusion groups, but after several listens the album begins to show Nelson's more obvious influences, namely the Beach Boys and the Beatles. In fact, there is a cover of George Harrison's "Dark Sweet Lady" on the album that remains very true to the original (although I've always HATED the steel guitar).

All of the songs on the album work around an acoustic guitar and catchy vocals by Nelson Bragg and while it is obvious that a lot of thought and effort was put into the album, both in writing and recording, the album's major flaw is just how similar the songs really are. The songs on the album run the gamut from slow, aching ballads to mid tempo light pop songs that just seem to melt into each other without any indication that a new song has begun or end.

Perhaps the most exciting song on the album, Tell Someone, despite having a great key change in the middle of the song, still seems to drag on and then finally returns to more balladeering. The album ends with the down tempo song Turn The Darkness Into Gold, a great song reminiscent of 70s style acoustic pop but the track left me feeling disappointed by the overall gloomy feel of the track and ultimately, the entire album.

Day Into Night is a great first release from Nelson Bragg and clearly shows off his talent as a song writer and solo artist, but the songs on the album just don't have enough diversity to make listening a very enjoyable experience. I suspect that Nelson Bragg's masterpiece is not quite here yet, but his first album proves that he has the potential, and hopefully will, blow the pop world away.

Dennis Wilson Rereleases

I'm sure you've heard already that Dennis Wilson's 1977 solo album Pacific Ocean Blue is finally being rereleased. You can read about it here, here, here, here, here and here. The rerelease of the album will be on 2 CDs featuring remastered tracks from Pacific Ocean Blue and his unreleased follow up album, Bambu. It will also have several tracks never before heard, even on the bootleg circuit.

It's going to be very awesome and unlike bootlegs releases before it (for example here), this rerelease will sound great and "Liner notes for the album are being penned by Beach Boys scholars such as David Leaf, Jon Stebbins, Ben Edmonds and David Beard, and the package will feature photographs by Wilson's close friend, Jan & Dean's Dean Torrence."
